Isortoq Beneficiation & Metallurgy
Bench studies completed by Xstrata Services have demonstrated that the beneficiation of the mineralised troctolite at Isortoq to a concentrate form is relatively simple. Under a production scenario, this implies a simple and cost effective process flow sheet. In addition, the project vendors report that a concentrate sample produced in the bench study has undergone successful smelting tests at a facility in China.
The steps for processing potential future ore from the Isortoq Project would be as follows:
- Initial beneficiation - concentrate produced with a coarse crush (125 µm) followed by low-strength magnetic separation. Irrespective of the grade of the initial head feed used in the tests, concentrate grades were consistent at:- 62.7% FeO (48.7% Fe); 19.2% TiO2 & 0.32% V2O5
- Metallurgical extraction – is via a specialised smelting process that involves the production of direct reduced iron followed by electric arc furnace smelting at high temperatures (~1,750oC)
- Product - titanium slag that can be sold into the pigment industry and pig iron with by-product ferro-vanadium that can be sold into the steel industry.
